On Saturday, May 9, the Episcopal Diocese of Washington gathered at Washington National Cathedral to celebrate confirmation, reaffirmation, and reception — welcoming 135 people making a public commitment to the Christian faith and the Episcopal tradition.
In her sermon, Bishop Mariann Budde reflected on the difference between knowing about Jesus and trusting in him, describing faith as “leaning into thin air, trusting that a rope will hold.” Through prayer, laying on of hands, music, and community, the service offered a powerful witness to the Spirit at work among us.
“May Christ dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love.”
“His power at work within you is able to accomplish abundantly far more than we can ask or imagine.”
“The entire Christian faith is built on the conviction that Jesus’ spirit is with us still.”
“I will not leave you orphaned.”
“The Christian life isn’t about ultimatums. It’s about love.”
“Your life matters.”
“God needs you to help heal the world, one person, one effort at a time.”
“You’re never alone.”
“God will send them an Advocate… Jesus’ very spirit that will be with them forever.”
“We are invited—never bullied—to experience Jesus’ presence and his love in our lives.”
“Jesus’ core mission was clear and his message was simple: Love your neighbor as yourself.”
