Diocesan Reparations News, Committees and Timeline (2019-2024)

Note: This page describes EDOW’s work on reparations from 2019-2024. In January 2025, the diocese began a new chapter in efforts toward reparations with the passage of three resolutions, including the creation of a new Committee. Information about those efforts will be added to EDOW’s website as the work progresses.

EDOW’s formal work on reparations began in 2019 with the Reparations Task Force, and in 2023, transitioned to the Committee on Diocesan Reparations. The Committee has communicated its progress through articles in the Diocesan Bulletin which we have collected here. The timeline lists official actions of convention and major endeavors of these two groups.

Committee and Working Groups (2019-2024)

Reparations efforts in the diocese were initially led by the Task Force on Reparations, which operated from 2019-2023. The Committee on Diocesan Reparations was formed in the spring of 2023 after the passage of the resolution Towards Repentance and Reparations at Diocesan Convention. Bishop Mariann made initial appointments to the Committee which consisted of two working groups: the Policy Working Group and the Education Working Group. This group continued the work initiated by the Reparations Task Force with ongoing educational efforts and the introduction of resolutions at the 2025 Diocesan Convention. Information about both groups is available here.

Articles on Reparations (2023-2024)

In 2023, EDOW committed to a regular communication about reparations in the e-bulletin. The articles on this page include stories about congregational histories (at Calvary DC, St. Columba’s DC, and St. Paul’s Waldorf), research presented at Diocesan Convention, along with reflections by EDOW members such as Reflections on Healing Histories: A Reparations Dialogue.
