The Church in the Public Square

September 13, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Event Series Event Series (See All)

Is there a relevant conversation to be had between church and state as we navigate loneliness, economic disparity, loss of meaning and anxiety?
What is the role and place of the Christian Church in the broader society?
What posture ought the Christian Church have in relation to the body politic?
Quiet refuge for the isolated?
Ancient wellspring of divine wisdom?
Spiritually transformative presence?
Front-line justice fighter?

Join us for a three-part conversation series on these questions, and more. All three conversations will take place at 5 PM at The Church of the Ascension and St. Agnes (1215 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington, DC 20005). See below for information about the three events:

September 13th — Brandon Paradise in conversation with Sam Kimbriel

Brandon Paradise studied economics and philosophy at USC and, in 2004, earned a J.D. at Yale Law School. He was a litigation associate with Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in New York and Sidley Austin, LLP in Los Angeles. He is currently Associate Professor of Law at Rutgers University. He is also a McDonald Distinguished Fellow at the Center for the Study of Law and Religion at Emory University. He has particular research interests in the intersection of race, religion and law.

Samuel Kimbriel is an author and founding director of Aspen Institute’s Philosophy & Society Initiative. He holds MPhil and PhD degrees from the University of Cambridge. He is part of an emerging generation of philosophers rethinking basic questions of individuality, identity, and community. Author of Friendship as Sacred Knowing: Overcoming Isolation (Oxford University Press), he is also Contributing Editor at Wisdom of Crowds.

October 25th — David Corey on the Common Purpose of the Church

December 6th — Ian Rowe in conversation with Katherine Sonderreger, moderated by David Corey.

We hope that you’ll join us for one (or all) of these meaningful conversations.
